COLLECTED WORKS BY ALFRED SCHNITTKE

Compozitor Publishing House Saint-Petersburg is preparing for publication an edition of Collected Works by A. Schnittke. The project is a collaboration between Compozitor Publishing House, the Schnittke family Archive, and the Alfred Schnittke Archive at Goldsmiths College, University of London. This critical edition is principally intended for the numerous performers, scholars and music lovers interested in Schnittke and his music-its main purpose is to provide them with access to his scores, which are not readily available in Russia (indeed, many of Schnittke's best known works have never been published in Russia).

The project was conceived by Alexander Ivashkin, general editor of the presented works and author of prefaces to all the volumes. Professor of Music at the University of London, Dr. Alexander Ivashkin is Director of the Centre for Russian Music and Curator of the Alfred Schnittke Archive in London. A personal friend of the composer, Professor Ivashkin is the leading world authority on Schnittke's music, having published several books on him in Russia, the USA, the UK, Japan, Germany and Italy. As a concert cello soloist, Alexander Ivashkin has performed and recorded all of Schnittke's works for cello, some of which were dedicated to him. All the scores will be checked against Schnittke's manuscripts and, wherever necessary, against the existing editions of his music. The solo parts of the concertos and chamber music compositions to be published will be edited (including suggestions for fingering and bowing) by leading Russian performers who have collaborated with the composer.

The first volume including three piano sonatas is to be released in the near future.
