TISHCHENKO Boris
The whole life of Boris Ivanovich Tishchenko is connected with St. Petersburg, where he was born on March 23, 1939. His teachers at the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Music College were V. Mikhelis (piano) and G. Ustvolskaya (composition). Later, already at the conservatoire, he studied piano under A. Logovinsky’s guidance and composition under V. Salmanov, V. Voloshynov and O. Yevlakhov. His post-graduate studying was connected with D. Shostakovich, whose influence can’t be overestimated. Subsequently Tishchenko’s Symphonies № 3 and 5 were dedicated to Shostakovich (the Fifth was written after his death). In 1963 Tishchenko composed his First Cello Concerto according to M. Rostropovich’s request. Three years later it was awarded with the First Prize at the International Competition “Prague Spring — 1966”.
In 1965 Boris Tishchenko started his pedagogical career at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire (being at the time the head of the composition faculty). From 1974 until his death he conducted the class of music composition where many distinguished masters were brought up.
Tishchenko’s creativity scopeembraces actually all the possible existing genres — from a cappella tune to multisymphonic cycles. The composer was greatly influenced by the music of L. Beethoven, F. Schubert, G. Mahler, M. I. Glinka, A. S. Dargomyzhsky, M. P. Musorgsky, P. I. Tchaikovski.
His most important discoveries lay in the music culture of non-European countries, such as India, China, Japan etc., as well as in the Russian folklore (in his early years he took part in folklore expeditions). Finally, the influence of the composers, living in the 20th century, such as B. Bartók, A. Berg, S. Prokofiev, I. Stravinsky and, of course, the composer’s teachers G. Ustvolskaya and D. Shostakovich are worth mentioning as a creative factor.
Boris Tishchenko’s music and even everyday life for many years is closely connected with the Compozitor Publishing House • Saint-Petersburg.
The Compozitor Publishing House • Saint-Petersburg is proud of being the first who announced this genius to the world being his first publisher and hopefully will be the first that would carry out the awesome task of publishing his Complete works edition.
The Compozitor Publishing House • Saint-Petersburg is the owner of exclusive rights for the compositions of Boris Tishchenko.
To our great sorrow, Boris Ivanovitch Tishchenko is no longer among us.
He died on March 10, 2010 but his memory and his genius will stay with us forever.
