Alfred Schnittke (1934–1998) — one of the most important composers to emerge in Russia after Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) revealed and explored new dimensions in Russian music. His works reflecting the highly complex, yet extremely fragile mentality of the late twentieth century have been performed at every important music festival, in major concert halls and are included in the repertoire of most major orchestras and opera companies. His music has been recorded on hundreds of compact discs for leading labels world wide.
The publication of Alfred Schnittke’s Collected Works is a joint project of the Compozitor Publishing House • Saint-Petersburg and the Alfred Schnittke Archive at Goldsmiths College, University of London. This critical edition is intended for performers, scholars and music lovers interested in Schnittke and his music. Its main purpose is to provide them with access to his scores, which are not readily available in Russia or elswhere. All the scores have been checked against Schnittke’s manuscripts and existing publications of his music. Concertos and chamber compositions have been published with solo parts edited by leading performers who have collaborated with the composer.
